MUSICAL ACTIONS
AKA - Occupy Classical Music
This series of Musical Actions, inspired by my direct involvement in the Occupy movement, explore the intersection of design and music. Color values, geometric equations, number patterns, page layout and typesetting are all tools to go further in expressing the language of music. Sometimes these experiments take on an abstract form, and sometimes they result in a very concrete translation. I mix both standard and graphical notation depending on the application. Each Action is designed to be experienced both as a visual work and a live musical performance.

PRIME REDACTION: An Action for Unpitched Percussion (2012)
PRIME REDACTION is a percussion piece for an indeterminate number of players. This Musical Action layers a series of matrices, each of which highlights rhythmic cells in a different prime numbered pattern. At the end of the piece, the combination of all cells that have been highlighted [as represented by the colored cells] are "redacted." The detailed page reveals the remaining, unplayed cells [those that are unhighlighted] that follow a pattern of prime numbers ... 1, 11, 13, 17, 19, etc.

GLOBAL: An Action for One or More Voices (2012)
"Lift every voice and sing." The most abstract of my series of Musical Actions, GLOBAL re-imagines a world map as a giant fermata, the musical symbol for "hold indefinitely," along with the instruction "tutti," meaing "everyone."

QUAD: An Action for Handbell Choir (2012)
Using the conventions of programming language and Boolean logic, QUAD sets up a series of instructions for a bell choir performance that allows for chance interactions under a structured form. With a performance layout based on the circle of fifths, this action for bell choir consists of two movements, one lyrical and the other strident.

USONIA: An Action for One or More Performers (2011)
Originally written for cello, USONIA is directly inspired by the eponymous style of mid-century architecture. This action translates into musical terms the intersection of the architectural form's lateral and longitudinal lines with its philosophy of creating harmony between the resulting building and its natural surrounding. Performances of this piece work best with sustaining instruments.
